Few days before traveling to London, I was invited in a very short notice to give a 5-minute pitch at Bayer Health. This is the sort of an invitation you cannot refuse… (I hate those 5 minute pitche.
So I traveled to Berlin for one day and had two hours before the event. I asked the Taxi Driver to take me to 19, Jungfernstig, Lichterfelde-most, Berlin.
19, Jungfernstig was where the Lab of Professor Baron Von Ardenne resided. Today it is some sort of a coffee shop\community center.
It is claimed that in this lab the Germans were able to enrich uranium due to the brilliance of Ardenne and Hutermans even before the American did it. It is also claimed that Ardenne and Hutermans diverted the effort from an Atomic Bomb to a Dirty Bomb which is also a horrible weapon but not as devastating.
It is also claimed that this was the secret secondary Nuclear effort by the Germans that the Americans knew nothing about during the war.
They were somewhat surprised to see me so I got from them Von Ardenne biography in German. I asked to go to the basement and we went one floor down other doors and levels were not available to me
Ardenne was assisted by one of the greatest theoretical physics of the 20th century, Professor Houtermans, which was from Jewish origins.
Houtermans was tortured by Stalin and exchanged to the Germans during the war.
It is said that Hutermans sent an encrypted telegram to his US colleges during WW2, which said.
“Hurry! We are nearly there!.”
It is a complex story in which also Werner Heisenberg, Houtermans and possibly also Von Ardenne tried to slow down and divert the Nazi nuclear effort.
