“History repeats itself first as a tragedy then as a farce”. Karl Marx.
What the Huffington post suggests reminds me of the marvelous book I read about the time between Lincoln election and the electoral college gathering and the inauguration.
Now don’t get me wrong President elect Trump is no Lincoln and will never be. But at those times there were those, including the President of Harvard U., Everett, that said that Lincoln was ill-suited for the high job especially at such dire times. There were others actually trying to rob the American people of its free choice.
The great Lincoln historian Harold Holzer describe in detail: the attempts on Lincoln life, the obstacles he had as president elect; and the efforts he made to get to the inaugural day as the President elect of the United States despite the attempts to replace him.
This same President of Harvard, Professor Edward Everett, was the keynote speaker at Gettysburg 1963. He was considered one of the greatest orators of his time. He made a speech at Gettysburg for two hours. Lincoln speech was after Everett and was about only 4 minutes long. Lincoln whose formal education amounted probably to less than a year was one of the greatest Presidents if not the greatest the US ever had. Everett is remembered now mostly for his opposition to Lincoln and as an example of how not to make a great speech.
To Everett credit – he wrote to Lincoln a letter after the Gettysburg address by Lincoln, In his letter he acknowledged Lincoln great speech and conceded that he, Everett, failed to say in two hours, what Lincoln said in just 4 minutes.
